One night. Two towns. One goal.

10 miles, through the night

Opposite actions, same goal

While one town sleeps out, the other walks the streets

On the night of Friday 9 October our Bishop Auckland team take part in a sponsored sleepout. Our Hartlepool teams do the exact opposite, hitting the streets and helping people get indoors.

Teams will cover known rough sleeping locations and other areas across Hartlepool, looking for anyone who is rough sleeping, at immediate risk of rough sleeping, or in housing distress and needing urgent support.

  • Bishop Auckland: our teams and supporters sleep out to raise funds and awareness
  • Hartlepool: our teams hit the streets to find people and bring them indoors
  • Partnered professionals walk with us across both towns

How the night unfolds

Midnight to morning

By the morning of World Homeless Day we want every person our teams have found rough sleeping to have been offered a safe place indoors and support towards their next step.

  1. 12 midnight — the sweep begins

Our Homeless Response Team heads out alongside partnered professionals to start the 10-mile route across Hartlepool.

  2. Through the night — finding people

Teams check known rough sleeping sites and the quieter corners in between, looking for anyone sleeping rough or in housing distress.

  3. Back to the Homeless Hub

Anyone we find is offered support and encouraged to come back to the Hub, where our Housing and Support Teams are waiting.

  4. By 8am

Our Homeless Response Team returns to the Hub to join everyone for a cooked breakfast, kindly donated by ASDA Hartlepool.

Hub open 12 midnight – 8am

What's waiting at the Hartlepool Homeless Hub

While the response teams are out on the streets, our Housing and Support Teams prepare the Hub to welcome anyone who needs help.

A safe, warm place

Somewhere off the streets for the rest of the night, with no questions asked at the door.

Breakfast and hot drinks

A hot meal and a warm drink for anyone who comes in, through to 8am.

Immediate housing advice

Our Housing and Support Teams are on site all night to talk through the options.

Assessments and referrals

Formal assessments and referrals started there and then, rather than weeks down the line.

Practical support and essentials

Warm kit, clean clothes and the everyday essentials people need to keep going.

A plan for what happens next

The aim is to use World Homeless Day to find people, bring them in and start working towards longer-term housing.

Why ten miles?

The ten miles mark the tenth of October — World Homeless Day. The route is planned to cover known rough sleeping locations and other areas across Hartlepool where people may be sleeping out.

What happens to someone the team finds?

They are offered support on the spot and encouraged to come back to our Homeless Hub, where they will find warmth, breakfast, immediate housing advice, an assessment and a plan for what happens next.

Can I take part on the night?

The sweep itself is carried out by our trained Homeless Response Team alongside partnered professionals. The best way to support the night is to donate, share the appeal, or join the sponsored sleepout in Bishop Auckland.

Where does my donation go?

Donations go directly towards the work we do supporting and housing people experiencing homelessness across the North East — the outreach round, immediate access beds, the Hub and the housing support that follows.

I've seen someone sleeping rough. What should I do?

Please tell StreetLink, which connects people sleeping rough anywhere in England and Wales to the local outreach team. In Hartlepool, that team is us.
