Your old sofa could furnish someone's first home
We collect good quality furniture free of charge across County Durham and Hartlepool. Some goes straight to people moving into a new home; the rest is sold in our shops to fund our work.
Why it matters
An empty flat isn't a home
When someone finally gets the keys to their own place, it's usually completely bare — no bed, no table, nowhere to sit. Donated furniture is what turns that empty room into somewhere worth coming back to.

What we can take
The things we're always short of
A good rule of thumb: if you'd happily give it to a friend, we can almost certainly use it.
Sofas & armchairs
Clean, undamaged and with the fire safety label still attached — we can't take upholstery without one.
Beds & mattresses
Frames, divans and mattresses in clean, unstained condition. Mattresses also need a fire label.
Tables, chairs & storage
Dining sets, coffee tables, wardrobes, drawers and bookcases — sturdy and complete.
Garden furniture
Benches, tables and outdoor seating that still has plenty of life left in it.
Bedding & homeware
New or freshly laundered bedding, towels, curtains, crockery, pans and small kitchen items.
Working appliances
Fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers in safe working order, under about eight years old.
What we can't take
A few things we have to turn down
It's never for the sake of being fussy — these are safety rules we have to work within, or items we simply can't pass on to someone else in good conscience. If you're not sure about something, send us a photo and we'll tell you straight away.
- Upholstery or mattresses with no fire safety label
- Anything ripped, heavily stained, damp or smoke-damaged
- Flat-pack furniture that's already been taken apart
- Cots, car seats, electric blankets and gas appliances

Before you get in touch
Still not sure whether we can take something? Just ask — a photo usually settles it.
Do you charge for collection?
No. Collection is completely free anywhere in our usual area, and our team will carry the items out for you.
Which areas do you collect from?
County Durham and Hartlepool, and the surrounding towns. If you're a little further out, ask anyway — we'll do our best.
What's this fire label I keep hearing about?
It's a small permanent label sewn onto sofas, armchairs and mattresses confirming they meet UK fire safety regulations. Without one we're not allowed to pass the item on, however lovely it is.
Can I drop items off instead?
Yes — bring them to our Hartlepool Hub & Showroom during opening hours. It's worth ringing first so someone's free to help you unload.
Can you clear a whole house?
Often, yes. House clearances and probate clearances are something we're glad to help with — get in touch and we'll talk it through.
Can I add Gift Aid to donated goods?
Yes. If you're a UK taxpayer, we can claim Gift Aid on the money your items raise when they sell, which adds 25% at no cost to you. We'll sort the paperwork when we collect.
